If you’ve been reading our latest blogs on the #TeamUWEBristol BUCS and sporting fixtures, you would have been reading the work of our 2018/19 Journalism placement student, Matthew Williams. Matt has been attending games and reporting all the action straight back to you but now it’s time to turn the tables and find out a little bit more about him!
Name – Matthew ‘Matt’ Williams
Age – 21
University course – Journalism, 3rd Year.
Home town – Cardiff, Wales.
Why did you want to become a UWE Bristol Sport Journalism Student?
I have always had a keen interest in a wide range of sports, whether it be Football, American Football or Rugby in particular. The journalism placement was the perfect opportunity for me to complete certain requirements of my degree and gain relevant work experience whilst doing something I enjoy doing.
What’s been your highlight of writing for us so far?
Reporting on the football, despite the torrential rain we had on that day.
What are you looking forward to most about being a journalist for us?
Watching and reporting on a range of sports… And hopefully a lot of UWE Bristol wins.
Do you play any sport yourself?
I used to play 11-a-side and 5-a-side football but I’ve not been able to for the past couple of years through injuries and busy schedules.
How do you like to spend your free time (outside of study and writing for us)?
A lot of my time is spent watching Netflix or sport although I’d like to get back into playing sport soon. I also enjoy visiting the range of bars on Gloucester Road.
‘Taking part in this placement has already been extremely useful.’
What inspired you to study at UWE Bristol?
I love the city of Bristol; it’s got lots to do no matter what you have in mind. It’s also close enough to home so when I fancy a trip back to Cardiff, I don’t have to spend half a day travelling.
What are your long term goals after graduating?
Ideally I’d love a career in Sports Journalism and taking part in this placement has already been extremely useful. I’ve did some work experience with Cardiff City Football Club at the end of last season where I wrote a match report on the day they got promoted so hopefully that will boost my options too.
You can continue to read Matt’s work throughout the year as he provides match reports from some of our clubs most thrilling games. Do you want Matt to report on any particular games? Let us know in the comments below.
