Over 250 parents and kids enjoyed the Centre for Sport’s 7th annual Family Fun Day last weekend and with 15 different sports and activities on offer, there was something for everyone.
The Family Fun Day was created as a joint enterprise between the Centre for Sport and Community Liaison to encourage local residents to use the great facilities that the University has to offer. It’s a free event for families around the Bristol area and allows both kids and parents alike to get active in a fun and relaxed environment. There’s the opportunity to try activities they may have never done before, such as climbing and trampolining as well as sample the rest of the Centre’s outstanding facilities like the squash courts and Olympic standard Astro Pitch.
As well as UWE Sport staff, students and volunteers who ran the day, Mohamed El Shorbagy, World Number 1 squash player also attended to give some pointers on the courts and share his experience.
It was a busy start to the morning with families queuing to get in before the event began. However, as soon as the doors opened, the Sport’s Hall flooded with bouncing bodies and happy faces as the trampolining and inflatable assault course got underway.
Climbing proved to be one of the most popular activities available with a steady queue of participants ready to take part with our fully qualified instructors throughout the day.
Luckily, the weather held out and the sun shone for the outdoor activities where the Astro Pitch saw people enjoy activities from hockey and football to Frisbee and quick cricket. Some parents even managed to squeeze in a quick sunbathe!
Event organiser, Tamara Getter, Sports Development Officer at the Centre for Sport said, ‘this free annual event has been growing in popularity and success since it began 7 years ago, it’s great to see families making the most of what we have to offer’.
The Centre also highly regards feedback from parents and children who attend the event. Praise came from one child who said she loved the climbing because she’d never tried it before.
“It’s wonderful to see the children trying new things and interacting with new people”

Many activities on the day replicate the additional services that the Centre provides, such as the Hotshots holiday camp and Parties. The Centre for Sport has also given parents the chance to come in and use the facilities with a free gym pass and induction.
