After a thrilling first week of tennis, the Williams sisters are set to kick things off on a very manic Monday at Wimbledon.
Serena Williams only just progressed to the fourth round after a tight game against British number one, Heather Watson. Watson fought hard against Williams, and 3-0 up in the third set, everyone thought that there was an upset on the cards. However, Williams showed why she was number one and came back strong to win the set 7-5. She now faces her sister, Venus, in the fourth round as she continues her quest to win all four grand slams in one calendar year.
The biggest upset of the tournament so far came from Dustin Brown, as he defeated Rafael Nadal in four sets. The dreadlocked German stunned the audience at Wimbledon with his impressive performance against the former world number one, winning 7-5, 6-3, 4-6, 4-6. Another upset came from the women’s singles as last year’s champion Petra Kvitova was knocked out by Jelena Jankovic. Kvitova stated that, “she was not really sure what happened” as she was beaten 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 in the third round.
Despite a courageous effort from the Brits in the first week at Wimbledon, Murray is the only British representative going into the second week. The Scot overcame a wobbly third set against Andreas Seppi to advance to the fourth round. He now takes on the 6ft 11, thirty-six year old, Ivo Karlovic, who is set to be a ‘big’ threat for Murray. They are to face each other this afternoon on centre court. Good luck Andy!
Other big names left in the competition include Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka, who all look to continue their winning ways today, on manic Monday!
